Castle and Century Celosias

Castle and Century Celosias
Gardeners can choose from so many kinds of celosias. The Castle Series and the Century Series are highly recommended.

Castle Series Celosia

The Castle series of celosias feature plume-like flowers. Seeds of Castle mix are available as well as the individual flower colors. The mix features flowers in orange, pink, scarlet, and yellow.

Castle Pink celosia was named an All America Selections winter in 1990. It also was chosen as an annual regional winner for the Southwest, and the Southeast.

Castle celosias are semi dwarf, well branched, vigorous plants that are 12 to 20 inches in height. These plants are consistent performers in the garden. They’re also recommended for containers.

These plants withstand heat, drought, and high humidity. In the garden, space the plants about a foot apart.

Castle celosias are quick flowering—about 60 to 70 days from the time the
seeds are sown. The blooms are over ½ inch wide and 1½ inches in length. The plumes appear throughout the summer until frost.

Century Mix Celosia

This plume type celosia was named a regional All America Selections annual winner in 1985 for the Northeast and mid-America. In addition, it was also named an All America selections national winner as well.

Seeds of Century Mix celosia are available from Twilley, Park Seed, and Harris-Garden Trends, and Hoss Tools.

Easy to grow, these are undemanding annuals. The semi dwarf uniform plants are basal branched. They range from ½ foot to over two feet in height with a spread of 1 to 1½ feet. They can be spaced as close as eight inches apart in the garden.

The heat tolerant Century celosias make a great bedding plant and are ideal for mass plantings and pots. Considered a very superior variety, it is ideally suited for cut flowers due to the foot tall flower stems.

Century Mix celosia is early to mid flowering, about 80 days from the time the seeds are sown. The long lasting plumes retain their lovely color. Each plant bears lots of large plumes on long sturdy stems.

Century Mix features various flower colors, including yellow, rose, fire, pink, salmon, cream, and orange. The red has bronze leaves and was named an All America Selections regional winner in 1985 for the Southwest and the Southwest. Century Pink celosia was introduced in 2017, while Salmon Pink, which is very early blooming, was introduced the following year.
